Melbourne-born Ida Rentoul (later Outhwaite) was a highly popular internationally-recognised Australian children’s fantasy illustrator, who held at least 18 one-woman exhibitions over her lifetime. During her long career, Outhwaite illustrated about 98 books, as well as postcards and other publications. Her work was influential in raising the status of illustration in Australia and creating a higher standard of publishing for children. Ref: M. Muir & R.
