Photograph Of Charles Goldie’s Painting “The Widow”

c1906. Vintage silver gelatin photograph, inscribed to “H.H. Wallace”, dated “31.5.06” and signed by Goldie in ink on original backing below image, 18.6 x 15.3cm. Discolouration, laid down on original backing with repaired corners and wear to edges.

Inscription in Maori reads “Kia H.H. Wallace. Haere ra – kia ora. Tou hoa [Go on – be safe. Your friend]. C.F. Goldie.” The image in the photograph is a portrait of Maori female elder Harata Rewiri Tarapata of Ngapuhi, painted by renowned New Zealand artist Charles Frederick Goldie in 1903.

Actor H.H. Wallace was the nephew of early Australian feminist Rose Scott (1847–1925). Additional information about Wallace is found in accompanying six newspaper clippings. Ref: Te Ara–The Encyclopedia of New Zealand.

Charles Frederick Goldie is one of New Zealand’s most celebrated artists and his autograph is highly sought after.
