Pokerwork Vase, Souvenir From Coo-ee Comedy Co

1931. Wooden vase with pokerwork, inscribed and dated in pokerwork and ink (partly on front of vase, signed “A. Donavon” in ink on base, 23 x 9.5 x 9.5cm. Crazing and minor surface loss to varnish, dents, paint splatters to lower back portion, some of the inscription partially obscured.

Inscription reads “Presented to Mrs Beard by the members of the Coo-ee Comedy Co as a small token of esteem, Xmas 1931 [for the following plays performed:] My Turn Next; Dumb; War to the Knife; Husband Hunters.”

The Coo-ee Comedy Co was run by William Thomas Howitt (Aust., c1876–1931) of Tumut, NSW during the 1920s. He was a hairdresser, tobacconist and held a wine license. Ref: The Tumut Advocate, 26.8.1924; Adelong and Tumut Express, 26.1.1912; Bray Family History.
