Double Bay Pulsates With Cosmopolitan Sophistication [Sydney, NSW]

Hungarian-born George Molnar was a noted “architect-professor, cartoonist-commentator, master water-colourist, writer (Statues) and social analyst [who] was awarded the OBE in 1971 and the AO in 1988 for his unique contribution to Australian society.”

Molnar, who lived in the eastern suburbs, “retained the air of a displanted European. His cartoons reflect the Hungarian aspect of the eastern suburbs of the 1950s to 1970s, when Double Bay was an enclave of continental delis, rissoles, "snowball" cakes, the Cosmopolitan restaurant (where a pianist played waltzes for customers seated on velvet banquettes), fashion boutiques with European imports, preparations for the Black and White Ball and Hungarian women standing behind shop counters in white sandals, inquiring of female customers "Lady is waiting?"
