[Maori Village] and [Studies Of Sheep, New Zealand]

c1860s–1880s. Pair of drawings, one in pen and ink and pencil, the other in pencil, 17.8 x 23cm (paper). Slight discolouration, foxing and soiling, perforations to upper edge of each, one with repaired tear to lower edge and strikethrough from sketch verso.

Some of the inhabitants of the Maori village are shown wearing kahu huruhuru (feather cloaks), while others wear European-style clothing. Some appear to have moko, the traditional facial tattoos, and a group of 15 people are shown attending a funeral ceremony. The background shows a marae (sacred enclosed area of buildings and cleared land).

A sketch of three men, two horses and a buggy appears verso of the sheep study.
