Lightfoot, Champion Trotting Mare Of Australia

c1902. Vintage silver gelatin photograph, captioned in ink on mount below image, 17.9 x 22.8cm (photograph), 52 x 62.5cm (frame). Slight silvering and retouching to image, some cracking to added plaster motif on original frame.

Caption continues “Osterley [&] Yarrawonga. Driver, Gus Milsom.” Plaster motif on wooden frame consists of thistles.

Lightfoot, sired by Osterley (dam Yarrawonga), was bred by John Robertson of Truganina in Victoria in 1895. Her owner was William James Beckett (1870–1965), politician and secretary of the Australian Trotting Association. In 1902, Lightfoot had a record of twenty victories. Ref: Sportsman, (Melb.), 30.4.1902; The Australasian, 6.12.1890; Australian Dictionary of Biography.

William Beckett’s wife was from Glasgow, Scotland, which may explain the thistle motif on the Edwardian frame.
