1911. Vintage silver gelatin photograph, postcard format, numbered “82” and captioned with date in negative lower left to right, postcard text verso printed in letterpress, 8.7 x 13.8cm. Slight soiling.

Caption continues “U.S. Aviation field, San Diego, Cal. Jan 25, 1911.” Postcard text includes “The Arcade View Co., 741 Fifth St., San Diego, Cal.”

Image shows the standard Model D (1911) flying boat, which took part in the early “experiments in off-the-water flying (1910 to 1912).”

Designed and built by American aeronautics pioneer Glenn Hammond Curtiss (1878–1930), the Model D had certain features to avoid infringing the Wright brothers’ patent. It was the first practical seaplane built and flown in the USA. Curtiss’ seaplane soon “achieved fame” with the United States Navy purchasing this model. Ref: Britannica.
