Alan McCulloch (Aust., 1907–1992).

[Threat To Australian Wool Industry]

1940. Pen and ink with pencil, captioned, signed and dated “’40” in image, captioned in ink and pencil with publishing annotations in and below image and verso, with date “5.4.40” in affixed Picture News label, 44.5 x 17.3cm. Slight foxing and soiling, old fold with cracking to centre of image, tear to left edge, pinholes to upper margin.

Captions include “Australian wool grower ‘Hey!’ The manufacture of synthetic wool in neutral foreign countries constitutes a serious threat to the Australian wool industry. Cartoon by Alan McCulloch.”

Picture News, published by The Herald and Weekly Times Pty Ltd, was a short-lived magazine first published in November 1939 and ceased in 1940.

Artist, critic, gallery director and art historian Alan McCulloch (1907–1992) initially worked as a bank teller while studying at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School and the Working Men’s College in Melbourne. “Encouraged by Will Dyson [1880–1938], he became an illustrator and writer, contributing stories, cartoons, and caricatures to newspapers and magazines,” eventually becoming one of Australia’s leading art critics. He also wrote a number of reference books including The Encyclopedia of Australian Art, and was the director of the Mornington Peninsula Arts Centre for 21 years.
