[Sumo-Wrestling Frogs – “Choju-giga” Animal Characters]

c1860s. Woodcut, 20.4 x 25.7cm (paper size). Old fold through centre, surface soiling, creases, paper loss and thinning spots to lower left corner.

This image is from the Edo period (1603–1867). Anthropomorphism of animals including toads or frogs has been used in Japan since the Heian period (794–1185). These caricatures were initially created to make fun of Japanese priests, suggesting an early form of manga (cartoon/comics). Ref: Minneapolis Institute of Art; Wiki.
