Tooths Brewery Collection
c1921-1925. Collection of 425 financial records including receipts, invoices, and cancelled cheques, many dated, most stamped or annotated in ink, sometimes including details concerning the goods or services billed or paid for, sizes range between 5 x 7.3cm and 34.2 x 21.5cm. Wear to most items, some pinned together in groups, others with perforations or stains. The collection forms a comprehensive survey of the activities of Tooth and Co., a major brewery and alcoholic beverage retailer in Sydney from early to mid-1920s. The receipts and invoices, which provide an insight into Tooth’s suppliers and operating costs, include tradespeople; advertising from various newspapers and periodicals; building materials and hardware; furniture; cleaning products and other consumables; goods purchased from department stores; horse feed; liquor; printing and stationery; rent; rates; insurance; signage; shipping and transport; telephones; and utilities, including coal, gas, and electricity. There are also receipts for donations and subscriptions. Also in the collection are invoices for the installation and creation of paintings on glass, which were installed on the outside of pub entrances to advertise Tooth’s beer.
