Kangaroo Valley, NSW
1928. Group of three vintage silver gelatin photographs, panorama format, all captioned and one dated in negative lower right, 12.7 x 97.9cm, 13 x 45.4cm, 12.4 x 51.8cm. Tears and chips to edges, minor crinkles, slight discolouration. Captions read (1) “Kangaroo Valley, NSW, 4.6.28”; (2) “Freebairn’s Commercial Hotel, Kangaroo Valley, NSW”; and (3) “‘The Laurels’, Kangaroo Valley.” The panoramic view of Kangaroo Valley is unusual, showing a 180-degree vista. Built in 1891, the Commercial Hotel was gutted by fire in 1932. It is still in operation, renamed as “The Friendly Hotel.” The Laurels, named after a row of camphor laurel trees, was built originally as a homestead in 1919 by the Watson family. It became a guest house in 1925 and is still in operation. Ref: The Canberra Times, 2.8.1987; The Shoalhaven News, 16.1.1932; The Laurels B&B website.
