[Nos 20 & 40] Devine Street, Erskineville [NSW]

c1937. Pair of vintage silver gelatin photographs, press prints, one with typed caption, and various publishing annotations in ink and pencil and five date stamps verso; the other photograph has three date stamps, 15.3 x 20.3cm, 12 x 16.4cm. Minor silvering, handling crinkles, indentations from caption verso.

Caption continues “well below street level.” Date stamps read for one image: 1937, 1949, 1955, 1961 and 1970; second image’s stamps read 1938, 1955 and 1966.

These photographs provide a rare example of the poor standard of some inner-city housing during the 1930s. To-date, both weatherboard cottages still stand, with some changes to their façades and fencing.
