1944. Linocut, initialled “B” in block lower right, titled, signed and dated in pencil in lower margin, inscribed and dated “1944” in another hand in ink on slip attached to frame verso, 16.6 x 13.8cm. Old folds and crinkles, laid down on original backing. Contemporary frame. Held in National Gallery of Australia, with the date “1945.” Sydney-born painter, draughtsman and poster artist, John Bainbridge studied at Swinburne Art School, and Melbourne National Gallery School. He lived in London for several years and created posters for Ealing Studios, London Underground and British European Airways. His work is held in overseas and Australian collections, including the London Transport Museum (UK), Victoria & Albert Museum (UK), National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of South Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, and Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences.
