Australian Printed Fabric With Japanese-style Landscapes

c1950s. Printed cotton, near-full bolt with original cardboard core, text printed in selvedge, original printed labels attached to selvedge with stamped information and added detail in ink, 121cm (width) x 18.5m (approx. length). Slight soiling to outside of bolt.

Text in selvedge reads “‘Nishida - Kingston Screenprint.” Labels include “Textile Printers Association of Australia.”

The Textile Printers’ Association was formed in NSW in 1948 by Sydney-based founding members Gilkes & Co. Pty Ltd and RM Hoskins Pty Ltd. Ref: Sernack-Chee Quee, T., (2020), Claudio Alcorso and Post-War Textile Culture in Australia, [doctoral thesis, UTS, Sydney].

During the 1950s in Australia, textile manufacturers were concerned about lower-priced Japanese imports. This fabric may have been manufactured to compete against that market.
