Fitzroy Rowing Club [Rockhampton Rowing Club]
c1878. Pair of albumen paper photographs, carte-de-visite format, one annotated and dated in ink and each with studio line printed on backing below image or verso, 9.2 x 5.9cm, 8.7 x 5.7cm. One image slightly faded. Annotation includes names of sitters: “J. Julius, S.W. Hartley, Harry Salmon, W. Sewell, J. Park”, their weights in stones and pounds, and “Fitzroy Rowing Club, Bachelor Crew, July 9th 1878.” Studio lines read “J.W. Wilder, Photographer, East Street, Rockhampton” and “Louis Buderus, Photographer, East Street, Rockhampton.” Named after the Fitzroy River, the Fitzroy Rowing Club in Rockhampton, Queensland, was established on 5 September 1877, with a membership of 102. The inaugural regatta was held on 24 May 1878, and the main event was won by Senior Fours Division: E. K. Ogg, S.W. Hartley, H. Salmon, and W. Sewell. As a result of this win, rowing became an increasingly popular sport and further clubs were founded across Queensland. In 1880 the Fitzroy Club was renamed the Rockhampton Rowing Club and regattas were held biannually. Ref: The Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton), 9.7.1936.
