King Gee Shorts
c1960s. Colour screenprint, 29.2 x 74.7cm. Creases with minor surface cracking. Text continues “Casuals. Utilities. Workmates. Bradmill Cloth. Made in Australia. Sanforized shrunk fabric. Reg’d td mk.” Established in Australia in 1926, King Gee’s name originated from a colloquial expression “King G,” relating to the then-reigning King George V. It was slang for “the tops” or “the greatest.” During the 1920s a person perceived as conceited would have attracted the comment “He’s so good he thinks he’s ‘King G.’” Ref: The Age, 2003; Smarter Clothing.com.
