View Of The Tower Of The Thundering Winds On The Borders Of The Lake See Hoo, Taken From The Vale Of Tombs [Lake Xi Hu, Hangzhou, China]

1796. Engraving, text including artist, title and date in plate below image, 36 x 49.4cm. Slight foxing overall, stains, tears and missing portions to margins.

Text includes “W. Alexander, delt. J. Landseer & T. Shirt, sculpt. London, published April 12, 1796, by G. Nicol.” In 1792 William Alexander, an English painter and engraver, was appointed as one of the draughtsmen to the Macartney Embassy to China. He made drawings for the plates which accompanied Sir George Staunton’s account of the embassy, published in 1797. Ref: Wiki.
