Grant Of Land Signed By Sir George Gipps

1842. Letterpress document on parchment with affixed embossed official seal, stamped, inscribed with dates and signed in ink in various hands including Sir George Gipps, Governor-in-Chief, and E.D. Thomson, Colonial Secretary, stamped verso, 35.7 x 44.1cm. Soiling, cockling and old folds overall, minor tears to edges.

The land, in the parish of Willoughby and Neutral Harbour (the original name of Neutral Bay), NSW, was granted to David Wallace by Sir Ralph Darling in 1830, but the present document was signed by [Governor] Sir George Gipps in 1842. The land was originally granted as “a special reserve, for the formation of a whaling or other mercantile establishment.”
