Frank Jesse Taylor, Maker Of Cricket Bats, And His Family, Victoria
c1870s-1890s. Group of seven items comprising four albumen paper photographs, a hand-coloured tintype, a wood engraving and letterpress card, and a colour digital photograph, most captioned in various hands in ink or pencil verso, two with photographer’s line or stamp on backing, sizes from 6.3 x 4.5cm to 10.2 x 15.3cm. Slight foxing and stains overall, some scuffs and uneven surface to tintype. Captions include “Charles Taylor; Uncle Charles at the gate of Watford Villa, his K. Flat home; Frank Taylor, Jessie Taylor, Charles [Taylor], Homan [Taylor], Abraham Rogers (no relation); The workshop at Kangaroo Flat” and “Homan Taylor.” Photographer’s line reads “Bartlett Bros, Bendigo.” Stamp reads “Jas. Colquhoun, photographer, by special appointment. [488] High St, Prahran.” Text on trade card includes “Taylor Bros. Cricket bat repairing works. Camp St, Kangaroo Flat” and a price list for various types of new cricket bats, wickets, balls, and repairs to cricket bats. The digital print is a modern copy of an earlier image of Charles Taylor and his wife. This is the earliest known cricket trade card in Australia.
