[Gladiator]

c1920s. Linocut, signed and editioned 10/100 in pencil in lower margin, 14.2 x 12.6cm. Minor paper remnants to image centre right, slight creases. Laid down on acid-free tissue.

Educated at the Slade School of Fine Art, Dorothy Burroughes was an illustrator, designer and linocut artist. She contributed to a number of magazines including The Bystander and Illustrated London News. She became well known for her illustrations of animals, which appeared in numerous books in the 1920s and 1930s. She also designed posters for the Underground Group (Electric Railway Company).
