1909. Colour lithograph, signed “W.L. Vernon, Govt Arch’t” and dated “29.11.09” in image lower right, annotated “Paddy’s Corner” in smudged ink on right portion of image in an unknown hand, 51.4 x 76.1cm. Slight foxing, repaired tears and missing portions to old folds. Linen-backed.

Text includes “with routes, distances and general information. Compiled from observation, existing maps and information supplied by Professor David and others. R.C.G. Coulter, 1908. 97943.” Historical, geographical and geological details are also listed. Held in NLA.

Walter Liberty Vernon (1846-1914) was an English architect who migrated to Australia in 1883 for health reasons, and pursued his career in Sydney, NSW. He was Government Architect from 1890 to 1911 and during his tenure designed many notable and now heritage-listed government and public buildings, including the Art Gallery of NSW.
