Built in 1928 by British-educated Baron Kishichiro Okuraas as an English-style luxury retreat, the Kawana Hotel attracted wealthy and famous Japanese and overseas guests, including actor Marilyn Monroe and baseball player Joe DiMaggio, and actor John Wayne. Its “world-class” golf courses, designed by Charles H. Alison, were opened in 1936. Ref: The Japan Times, 2002; Planet Golf.
