Kawana Hotel, Ito, Japan
c1936. Colour process lithograph, signed “K. Siby [?]” in image lower right, 81.4 x 60.7cm. Repaired slight tears and creases overall. Linen-backed. Text in English continues “Two 18-hole golf courses. Olympic size pool.” Built in 1928 by British-educated Baron Kishichiro Okuraas as an English-style luxury retreat, the Kawana Hotel attracted wealthy and famous Japanese and overseas guests, including actor Marilyn Monroe and baseball player Joe DiMaggio, and actor John Wayne. Its “world-class” golf courses, designed by Charles H. Alison, were opened in 1936. Ref: The Japan Times, 2002; Planet Golf.
