“Wanganui” [Clipper Ship]
c1880s. Watercolour with gouache, signed “G.W. Whiter” in pencil lower left, titled in ink in another hand on original accompanying label mounted below image, 43.2 x 59cm. Minor paper loss to image edges. One of the last ships built for the New Zealand Shipping Company, the Scottish-built Wanganui made her maiden voyage from London to Lyttleton, New Zealand in 1877. She ran until about 1889 when she was sold to the Shaw, Savill & Albion Line and renamed Blenheim. Ref: Victoria University, Wellington, NZ.
