c1890s. Oil on card, posthumous studio stamp verso, 21.6 x 46.2cm. Slight scuffing. Provenance: Frank P. Mahony estate. Mahony’s work is well represented in the AGNSW. Australian-born Federation-era painter, illustrator and Bulletin cartoonist Frank Mahony is best known for images of the bush. Early in his career in Australia, before travelling to London, his drawings and paintings were much admired and soon after he graduated from art school, the Art Gallery of NSW purchased three of his works. Together with A.H. Fullwood and Julian Ashton, he pioneered Sydney weekend sketching camps. Ref: JLG.
