Two WWI Hand Waver Flags
1919. Pair of flags with stencil on cotton fabric with wooden handles, 29 x 40cm, 29.5 x 35cm. Slight soiling, old wear and stains. Text reads “Victory. 1919. Peace” on one flag with blue stencilled background on white cloth, and “Welcome Home” on the other flag with gold stencilled lettering on purple cloth. These flags are extremely rare surviving examples of commemorative hand wavers for WWI. It is believed that these flags were made in Australia due to their basic printing process and unsophisticated finish. The Imperial War Museum in London and the Australian War Memorial do not appear to have similar examples.
