Bishopscourt in Randwick was the “official residence of the Anglican Bishop of Sydney. Constructed in 1859 for a total of £7000, it was built for Bishop Frederic Barker. The official residence was moved to Bishopscourt, Darling Point in 1911 and the mansion was sold to the Good Samaritan order of Catholic nuns to operate as a convent until it was destroyed by fire in 1924.” In November 1925 the auction of the estate broke the record for outdoor sales, realising over 22,000 pounds. In 1899 Bishopscourt was shown bordered by Carrington Road, Allison Road, Brooks Street and Susan Street (now Clovelly Road). Ref: Dictionary of Sydney; SMH, 12.2.1926.
