c1960. Group of four items consisting of two posters showing the mascot "Smokey", one publication Bush Fire Bulletin and a photograph depicting "Smokey" with diorama.

Description of group, as follows:

(1) Memo from Smokey! Be careful with matches, smokes, campfires, every fire. Remember, only you can prevent bush fires!, c1960. Colour process lithograph, signed “Hetherington” in image lower right, additional text “V.C.N. Blight, Government Printer. Issued by the NSW Bush Fire Prevention Committee, authorised by the Hon. C.A. Kelly, MLA, Chief Secretary” in lower margin, 74.8 x 48.2cm. Slight foxing and discolouration, old folds, minor crinkles.

(2) Memo from ‘Smokey’. Keep their beauty matchless. Prevent bush fires, c1960. Colour process lithograph, signed “Hardman” in image centre right, additional text “V.C.N. Blight, Government Printer. Issued by the NSW Bush Fire Prevention Committee, authorised by the Hon. C.A. Kelly, MLA, Chief Secretary” in lower margin, 74.8 x 49.5cm. Slight foxing and discolouration, old folds, minor crinkles.

(3) Bush Fire Bulletin, 1st June, 1960, Vol. 4, No. 2. Small quarto, 16pp, letterpress, 23.8 x 15.3cm. Text in bulletin includes “Published Quarterly by the Bush Fire Committee, Chief Secretary’s Department, 121 Macquarie Street, Sydney.”

(4) [Bush Fire Committee], c1960. Vintage silver gelatin photograph, studio stamp “Photo by NSW Gov’t Printer” and numeric annotation in pencil verso, 25 x 20cm. Minor crinkles, old folds. The photograph shows a large statue of “Smokey” (the committee’s koala mascot) standing behind a landscape diorama with letter symbols. On either side of “Smokey” are two posters, one with a legend to the diorama; the other with a fire prevention message.

Norman Frederick Hetherington was an Australian artist, teacher, cartoonist (known as "Heth"), puppeteer, and puppet designer. He is best remembered as the creator of one of Australia's longest running children's shows, Mr. Squiggle. Hetherington was the sole operator and voice of its star performer, the Mr. Squiggle marionette. Ref: Wiki.
