Adelaide Photograph Album

c1864. Leather-bound album with metal clasps and ivory or bone trim, containing 31 albumen paper photographs, carte-de-visite format, many photographs captioned in ink on album pages, most with printed photographers’ studio lines verso, photograph sizes range from 6.4 x 9.3cm to 8.8 x 6cm (approx. each), 16 x 13.5 x 5.5cm (album). One photograph creased, slight discolouration or soiling to some photographs and to album pages, some pages with minor tears, wear to cover.

The album contains 22 mostly street views and buildings of Adelaide, six unknown portraits, a view of Port Elliott; and a building in Wallaroo. The album also includes a carte-de-visite of the Covenanters or Martyrs Memorial in Greyfriars Kirkyard, Edinburgh, Scotland. Images include: the Town Hall; St Paul’s Church; Bank of Australasia & Exchange; Imperial Alliance Office & Savings Bank; Supreme Court House; Government Offices; National Bank of Australasia; the Institute; Club House, North Terrace; the hospital; Independent Chapel, Hindmarsh Square; Hindley St (2 views); Rundle St (5 views); and King William St (3 views).

Studio lines include: “B. Goode, Photographic Artist, 69 Rundle St, Adelaide [23 views of Adelaide]; Photographed by Anson & Francis, Adelaide Photographic Institution, 31 Rundle St [1 portrait]; Photo by H.J. Thwaites [2 portraits]; T. Duryea, Photographer to His Excellency, 66 King St [1 portrait]; W.M. Nixon & Son, Travelling Photographers near Wellington [SA] [1 view]; R.S. Stacy, Photographer [1 view].”

This collection, consisting of mainly outdoor views of Adelaide in a carte-de-visite format, predominantly by one photographer (B. Goode), is extremely uncommon. From the 1860s Bernard Goode a.k.a. B. Goode (c1834–1897) had a “thriving photography and photographic supplies business” and was considered to be one of the prominent photographers in Adelaide at that time. Ref: K. Magee, PhD thesis on Captain Sweet, University of Adelaide, 2014.
