HRH The Duke Of York and HRH The Duchess Of York

1927. Pair of Australian-made bas-relief bronze medallions and manufacturer’s pamphlet, each with caption and date “March 30, 1927” around the upper portion, 9.6cm (diameter, each medallion), 15 x 12cm (pamphlet). Slight oxidation and soiling.

The reliefs depict HRH the Duke of York (1895–1952), later King George VI; and the Duchess of York (1900–2002), later Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

The date on the medallions suggests that these were issued during the Royal Family’s extensive tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1927. On 30 March, their Royal Highnesses attended a reception at Sydney Town Hall, during which they were visited by over 40,000 people. Ref: The Sydney Morning Herald, 30/3/1927.

The medallions are accompanied by a four-page pamphlet, titled “Monteath Photo Sculpture Limited. A New Art. Bronze Medallions from Life in Bas-Relief”, which describes the manufacturing process and the products available from the company’s store in the Victoria Arcade, 44 Castlereagh Street, Sydney.
