Caption and annotation read “1983. Bob Hawke, ALP campaign launch. He became prime minister.” Label includes “Lorrie Graham, Wildlife Photo Agency, 1/165 Hastings Pde, Bondi Beach.”

Lorrie Graham recalled the circumstances which inspired this image "I saw the possibility of the shot as soon as I walked into the Opera House. It took a lot of crawling about on the floor and three and a half rolls of film to get the one frame where the microphones covered Mr Hawke’s eyes."

“Lorrie Graham, photojournalist, was given her first camera, a Kodak plastic brownie, at the age of eight. She began her photographic career as the first female photography cadet at the Sydney Morning Herald [in 1975] before moving to London in 1978 to work at The Observer. In 1981, she returned to Australia as the staff photographer at The National Times, winning the Graham Perkin Award in 1986, and in 1987 was picture editor and chief photographer at the Times on Sunday. After working as a staff photographer at The Bulletin in 1988 and 1989, she embarked on a successful freelance career. Her work has included photographic commissions, solo and group exhibitions, books, and stills shoots for films. Graham has been published in newspapers and magazines including The Times, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Stern, Paris Match, Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, HQ Magazine, The Age, The Independent, The Independent Monthly, Australian Geographic and The Monthly.”

Graham has also completed many assignments for AusAID in the Asia–Pacific region. In 2017 she became the first female photojournalist to be inducted into the Australian Media Hall of Fame. Her photographs are held in the National Gallery of Australia, National Library of Australia, Museum of Sydney, and the State Library of NSW.” Ref: National Portrait Gallery; Lorrie Graham.
