Miniature Photograph Albums Of Female Portraits & London Landmarks

c1890s. Group of three miniature albums housing 30 albumen paper photographs, one with brass cover and two with “Album” in embossed gilt text to buckram covers, stored in a miniature wicker basket with a hinged lid; sizes range from 1.5 x 1cm to 1.7 x 2.2cm (photographs) and 2.4 x 2.2cm to 3.2 x 4.3cm (albums). Minor oxidation to brass, slight wear to edges of buckram covered albums, some cockling to pages.

The album with brass covers contains 12 unknown female portraits in an oval format. The other two albums contain a total of 18 photographs of landmarks in London: 7 in one album and 11 in the other. There is some duplication in these two sets of images. The landmarks include the Houses of Parliament, London Bridge, Crystal Palace, Albert Hall and St Paul’s Cathedral.

Miniature photographic albums, containing landmarks and portraits, were a popular form of 19th-century keepsakes and social displays. These albums often included portraits of women who were celebrities. Ref: National Gallery of Australia; National Portrait Gallery (UK).
