George Taylor “Dealing Out Stew Instead Of Stoush”
c1910. Vintage silver gelatin photograph, postcard format, captioned and signed “Little, Photo” in negative lower left to right, photographer’s line printed verso, 8.8 x 13.8cm. Wear to corners, minor chips to edges, slight discolouration. Photographer’s line reads “J.A. Little, Valley, Brisbane.” Depicts workers with cups and plates in an outdoor kitchen, Brisbane area. The Australian word “stoush” means a fight or disagreement, implying George Taylor might have been a boxer, a brawler or a passionate unionist (for station hands etc). Known for his 1932 photograph of the collapse of the Hinton Wharf, Hunter Valley, NSW, press photographer John Albert (Jack) Little’s career began as a pianist and composer in Brisbane. Around 1910 he became interested in photography, using acquaintances for subjects until he won a competition. According to an article in People magazine, there were no “actual” press photographers at that time and Little’s career in photography commenced when he was asked to take a picture of a murder scene. During WWI, he had a successful business taking portraits at light horse and infantry camps at Chermside and Enoggera. In Sydney, he worked for various newspapers including The Sydney Sun before taking a job at The Newcastle Sun. He came out of retirement to take photographs during WWII. Among his well-known photographs, is a shot of “Don Bradman being chaired from the ground by his Queensland opponents after scoring a world record 452 not out in the 1930 Sheffield Shield match against NSW at the SCG.” Little said that the other photographers assigned to the job had left before close of play, leaving him as the only one to “witness and capture the dramatic moment.” Ref: Greg Ray, Photo Time Tunnel website; People magazine, 10 Sept 1952; Sydney Morning Herald, 7.1.1929.
