c1915. Pair of ink and wash caricatures, each signed and captioned lower right or left, 27 x 10.8cm, 7.6 x 30.8cm. Soiling, foxing, minor indentation, missing portions to both margins for one. These two drawings are illustrated in the book Caricatures by Low: collected from the “Sydney Bulletin” and other sources, published in Sydney in 1915 by Tyrrell's Limited. Born in Ohio, USA, to a family of English migrants who returned to England when the father died, Herbert Freemont Hardacre (1861–1938) “migrated to Queensland in the [steamship] Nowshera in 1883 and roved Queensland and NSW for six years as a butcher.” He became involved in trade unions and was an advocate for more equitable use of land as well as for the rights of children, and a supporter of better access to education. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1893 until 1919, served as Secretary for Public Lands and Secretary for Agriculture in 1899 and as Secretary for Public Instruction from 1915 to 1919. Born in Ireland, County Clare, Andrew Joseph Thynne (Aust., 1847–1927) was a lawyer and politician, who was the Attorney-General of Queensland from 1888 to 1890. He was a member of the Queensland Legislative Council from 1882 to 1922, and during WWI was the chairman of the Queensland Recruiting Committee, as well as serving in various other roles such “as president of the Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade, the Boy Scouts Association, the Chamber of Agriculture, the Law Association, Brisbane's Johnsonian Club, and chairman of the Board of Technical Education.” Ref: Australian Dictionary of Biography; Wiki.
