WWI Autographed Sheet Music By Australian Composer Charles W. MacCarthy

1915–1916. Group of six published, lithographically printed sheet music, five inscribed and signed by MacCarthy and most dated in ink on title page, 36.4 x 26.3cm (approx. each). Slight discolouration, foxing, soiling, some wear to edges.

Uncommon WWI Australian autographed sheet music.

Title pages include:

1. “Our Boys, You Bet!” Recruiting song;

2. “Back to Tipperary.” New song for our boys at the Front, with special verses for the navy;

3. “The Boys of the Dardanelles”;

4. “The Toast is ANZAC, Gentlemen!” Published for the benefit of the Returned Soldiers Association;

5. “Oh Mother, Ashore!” A soldier’s parting. Dedicated to a brave mother who has given her three sons to Liberty’s cause. Illustration by C.W. MacCarthy;

6. “The Flag that Stands for Freedom.” Patriotic song.

One composition is by J.C. Lauder, the rest by Charles W. MacCarthy. Most inscriptions are addressed to “Robert”, who appears to have been a friend of MacCarthy.

An obituary describes surgeon Dr Charles William MacCarthy (Aust., 1848–1919) as a “cultured and picturesque figure from the social and professional life of Sydney...A distinguished surgeon, the deceased gentleman was equally well known as a painter, a sculptor, a musician, and a litterateur, and in artistic circles his genius was much admired. He was more than a talented amateur. The National Art Gallery was glad to acquire his portrait bust of his daughter, Maud, the famous violinist…[His] life-sized bust of Napoleon Bonaparte, [was] exhibited at the Panama Exhibition [in 1915].” Ref: Freeman’s Journal, (Syd.), 12.6.1919; Monument Australia; Australian Dictionary of Biography.
