Australian Tramp Art Miniature Armchair

c1930s. Carved wood, 30.6 x 17.5 x 17.5cm. Varnish crazed and chipped.

This armchair was assembled using notched joints without any adhesives, nails or screws. Unlike the more elaborate American style, this chair has less decorative carving, which is in keeping with similar Australian Tramp Art works.

“Tramp Art is an international style of woodworking which initially emerged in America in the latter half of the 19th century. Some of Tramp Art's defining characteristics include chip or notch carving, the reclamation of cheap or available wood such as that from cigar boxes and shipping crates, the use of simple tools such as penknives, and the layering of materials into geometric shapes through glue or nails…Although widespread use of wooden cigar boxes in the 1850s sparked involvement in Tramp Art, it was most prevalent during the Great Depression…The term ‘Tramp Art’ seems to have originated in a ‘1959 article by Frances Lichten in the magazine Pennsylvania Folklife…to describe crafts constructed from waste materials such as discarded cigar boxes and assembled with a penknife.’” Ref: Wiki.
