Alcazar D’Été. Yvain

1890. Colour lithograph, signed in image centre right, printer’s line in lower margin, 80 x 64cm. Repaired tears, creases, stains and edge wear. Linen-backed.

The event poster advertises the performer Yvain at the Alcazar d’Été. Alfred Choubrac presents the young entertainer in evening dress with an extravagant white bow and flower, set against a loosely brushed blue background. The portrait combines a carefully modelled face and costume with enormous black-and-red display lettering, giving equal weight to celebrity and venue. Choubrac’s signature appears at right, and the lower margin identifies Ateliers Choubrac at Colombes as printer. A dated example of the same design in the Bibliothèque nationale de France establishes the 1890 publication date. The sheet forms part of the flourishing culture of Parisian café-concert advertising, where recognisable performers were transformed into commanding street images.
