Shemen Salad Oil. Makes Meals Tastier

c1930-1948. Colour lithograph, 48 x 35cm. Minor creases and surface wear. Linen-backed.

A genial chef strides across a divided blue-and-grey background carrying a plated fish-and-salad meal in one hand and an oversized tin of Shemen Salad Oil in the other. Prominent wording includes “Shemen Salad Oil. Makes meals tastier” and “Made by ‘Shemen’ in Palestine.” The product pack, chef’s hat and serving dish are picked out with yellow and warm orange accents, giving the advertisement a strong retail presence. Shemen was one of the pioneering industrial concerns of the Haifa Bay area, developing a substantial oil and soap works; a 1939 Library of Congress photograph documents its Haifa edible-oil refinery during the British Mandate period. The English-language wording and prominent “Palestine” origin statement suggest export or English-speaking consumers, while the oversized illustrated tin preserves useful period packaging detail. The layout sells the product through professional culinary approval and improved flavour rather than technical claims, combining modern industrial identity with an approachable domestic-food message.
