[Pyramids]

c1970s. Colour process print, 51 x 76cm. Minor creasing and handling wear visible. Linen-backed.

Three monumental pyramidal forms rise from a rough desert foreground in a stark blue-and-black photographic composition. Deep triangular shadows cut across the illuminated stone faces, while the intense monochrome blue suppresses natural colour and gives the scene an almost abstract geometric character. No destination wording, issuing organisation, artist or printer credit is visible on the sheet; the image stands alone within a broad pale margin. The low viewpoint exaggerates the mass of the structures and allows their repeating triangular profiles to dominate the horizon. Familiar archaeological architecture is transformed through extreme colour and contrast into a modern graphic image, balancing the documentary character of photography with the formal simplicity of a poster. The lack of advertising copy gives the sheet an unusually enigmatic presence.
