Cunard M.V. “Britannic”
c1940. Colour lithograph, signed “Samuel M. Brown” in image lower right, reference “Printed in England B. 1512” in lower right margin, 50 x 74cm. Minor handling wear and slight surface marks visible. Linen-backed.
Samuel John Milton Brown shows the Cunard motor vessel Britannic driving toward the viewer through a dark, choppy sea, its black hull and white superstructure sharply modelled against long grey clouds and a pale blue sky. The ship’s name is visible at the bow and Brown’s signature appears at lower right, above the printed title “Cunard M.V. ‘Britannic’”. A small lower-margin reference reads “Printed in England B. 1512”. The c1940 design belongs to Cunard’s tradition of commissioning marine artists to present its liners as objects of scale, speed and engineering confidence. Brown, a British marine painter closely associated with shipping subjects, gives the vessel a low viewpoint and strong forward movement, turning a comparatively restrained ship portrait into persuasive transatlantic travel publicity.
