Shin Tokyo Meisho Meguri Kyōsō Sugoroku [New Tokyo Famous Sites Tour Race Sugoroku]

1925. Colour printed sugoroku game sheet with Japanese text, 55 x 79cm. Old folds, minor edge wear and slight stains visible. Linen-backed.

A dense, brilliantly coloured map turns metropolitan Tokyo into a racecourse of red routes and black stopping points, crowded with railway cars, monuments, parks, public buildings, entertainment districts and caricatured figures. The title identifies the game as “新東京名所巡り競争双六” (Shin Tokyo Meisho Meguri Kyōsō Sugoroku). It was designed for the inaugural 1925 issue of King magazine, with Asano Kaoru credited for the illustrations and Dainihon Yūbenkai Kōdansha as publisher. The Edo-Tokyo Museum holds another example of the same design. Sites including Tokyo Station, Meiji Shrine and Ueno are woven into a playful route through the modern capital. As both magazine supplement and board game, the sheet converts urban sightseeing, transport and reconstruction-era civic identity into an interactive panorama for a mass readership.
